Native Trail

The 2022 Qipco 2,000 Guineas is an exciting renewal with the Charlie Appleby and Aidan O’Brien yards arriving at Newmarket in excellent form. Native Trail is hard to oppose for the Charlie Appleby team and his stablemate Coroebus, who will be having his seasonal debut, looked to be in good order on a recent course gallop. Luxembourg for the Aidan O’Brien team is unbeaten, and you couldn’t fail to be taken by his three successes, particularly in the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster. He will mount a strong challenge ahead of his step up to middle distances. The first three in the betting Native Trail Unibet evens, Luxembourg Unibet 5/1 and Coroebus Unibet 5/1 are clear of the field, with Perfect Power looking the strongest challenger, whilst Eydon and Light Infantry will appeal to those looking for a bigger priced each way selection.

Enjoy a fascinating 2,000 Guineas Day at Newmarket or #athome watching on ITV Racing and Racing TV.

Cheers!

1.50 Newmarket – Handicap Heritage Handicap (6f)

Jumby was third here at the Craven meeting in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes to Double Or Bubble and Garrus after a slow start when staying on at the finish. This colt will step up for that run and has an excellent record on the Rowley Mile with form figures of 311. He has won here on good to firm so the quick conditions will suit and Jumby has the Group class to take this competitive handicap.

Apollo One almost won a handicap off a mark of 100 on the July Course last year, and is 8lb better off for a neck with the winner that day, Blackrod (reopposes today). Apollo One also delivered some other good performances on the July course in 2021, whilst I’d ignore his last start on the all-weather in early February this year when he broke badly. Apollo One has shown on the turf that he needs the quick ground, goes best fresh (both wins after a break) and any horse that has the ability to (almost) win a handicap off a three-figure mark has to be an each-way play in a race where five places are being paid by Unibet.

2.25 Newmarket – Suffolk Handicap Heritage Handicap (1m 1f)

Dhahabi for the in-form Charlie Appleby yard is having his first start for 567 days and he is more than capable of winning after this long absence. Dhababi’s third career start was in October 2020 when finishing third behind One Ruler and Van Gogh in the Group 3 and this colt has been given a mark of 103. Given that he has been given a Hardwicke Stakes entry this would signify that Godolphin clearly think he’s better than a handicapper. When he won on his debut on the July Course back in 2020, New Mandate was back in third, and he’s now rated in the 110s and beat the smart Sir Busker at Ascot on Wednesday. This makes him look well treated on 103, absence or no absence and Dhababi has won on good to firm.
Unibet 100/30 win

3.00 Newmarket – Palace House Stakes Group 3 (5f)

Saint Lawrence for the in-form Roger Varian team is an interesting contender on his first start in a sprint, which doesn’t look it has much pace on. Saint Lawrence, who went well fresh last year when just touched off under top weight in a seven furlong handicap, but showed he had sprinting speed when second to Rohaan over six furlongs at Ascot on his next start. This is his seasonal debut, and he comes here after a wind operation and clearly goes well fresh. An each way contender.

3.40 Newmarket – Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes Group 1 (1m)

Native Trail (nap) for the Charlie Appleby yard is a strong favourite and this unbeaten two-year-old looked impressive physically when winning the Craven comfortably. He showed some strong speed figures on that occasion and he looks capable of more improvement for sure. Last season he won on the July course on good to firm and then came to the Rowley Mile to win the Dewhurst comfortably beating Dubawi Legend (reopposes), having been to Ireland to win the National Stakes finishing ahead of Point Lonsdale (reopposes). It is hard to oppose Native Trail and he will retain his unbeaten record winning the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.
Unibet Evens

Perfect Power is worth an each wager to take on the front three in the 2,000 Guineas, providing he stays obviously, which he looks likely to do. His Middle Park victory on the Rowley Mile on good to firm over six furlongs was eye-catching and his Greenham success on seasonal debut, when coming off a strong pace to lead in the final furlong showed that he is a serious contender.
