Community Shield — Sunday, August 4 at 3pm

City favourites to win

Manchester City dominated English football last season, sweeping all three domestic trophies. They also held off a spirited Liverpool side in the battle for the title and a fresh one-on-one with the Reds is expected this season too.

City have strengthened over the summer with the arrivals of Rodri and Angelino. They have also offloaded Fabian Delph and Douglas Luiz to raise some cash which may be spent before the transfer window closes.

City have not exactly been tested in pre-season and their last outing was a 3-1 victory over Yokohama a week ago. They therefore head into this clash at Wembley potentially not up to speed — something that could greatly help Liverpool.

Still, City are 1.90 to win the Community Shield and could well walk it if they dance to Pep’s tune.

Liverpool a decent price

Liverpool face City less than two months after winning the Champions League. That triumph overrides some of the pain of not clinching the Premier League title. But the Reds have brooded over that domestic defeat all summer and now is the time to correct things.

Liverpool will want to show City who is boss straight away here — and they could well raise the temperature inside Wembley. The Reds have their top stars back and, while some may not be 100 per cent fit after competing in international tournaments this summer, Liverpool have enough firepower to hurt City.

Liverpool have endured a disappointing pre-season in terms of results but did beat Lyon 3-1 in midweek to set themselves up nicely for this game. They are 3.80 to win.

Goals galore

Expect goals in this game. Between them, City and Liverpool averaged 2.4 goals per game in the Premier League last season. That is a staggering figure and exposes just how offensive-minded both teams were in 2018/19.

Heading into this season City have strengthened their forward line, while Liverpool have not touched their excellent attacking force. Remember, this is only the Community Shield and while the managers will want to win the game, they will also let the players ‘express’ themselves a bit.

So we should expect plenty of goals here and you can watch and bet on the game via our football live stream. Both teams have scored in four of the last seven meeting between Liverpool and City. Both teams to score in both halves is priced at 12.50.
