New York came into their three-game series with the Tigers nine games ahead of second place Tampa Bay in the AL East. They are all set to win the division and cruise into the playoffs. But their manager wants the Yankees to keep up the momentum and will be exacting a series sweep against the Tigers here.

Now, New York will probably send pitcher J A Happ to the mound in an attempt to maintain some good form from the left-hander. Happ has not conceded a run in his last 15 innings and his hits have been driven down over the past few games.

It’s hard to see how the Tigers can win this one.

Rockies vs Cardinals — Thursday, 12 September at 20:10 BST

The later game on Thursday evening worth following comes from Colorado. The Rockies have hit a disastrous patch in the NL West and sit bottom of the table, way off the pace. They headed into their three-game series with the Cardinals 1-9 for the last 10 games. And it doesn’t look like their fortunes will improve much here either.

After all, the Cardinals are top of the NL Central and are battling to stave off the Cubs. They head into they series after beating the Pirates in their last two outings and look good for a win over this three-match run here.

The Rockies may offer up one of their lesser-used pitchers on Thursday, with Tim Melville (3.66 ERA) on the slate. But St Louis betting fans will be confident Miles Mikolas’ arm can do the business for the visitors.

Cubs vs Pirates — Friday, 13 September at 21:05 BST

Keeping apace with the Cardinals is Chicago, who are desperate to pinch top spot in the NL Central. The issue for the Cubs is they may run out of games to reverse the gap. Still, Chicago can expect a playoff spot this October and face the lowly Pirates on Friday in the first of a three-game series.

This series will come after a four-game outing at the Padres during midweek. But with San Diego currently labouring in the NL West, the Cubs should head into this Pirates series high on confidence after a wealth of victories.

So can the Pirates stop the Cubs here? It doesn’t seem likely. They are enduring a miserable time and will play Chicago just a day after a three-game sweep at the Giants.

Consider the Cubs already have a W8 L5 record over the Pirates this season and it’s clear Friday’s game is only going one way.
