When is Michael van Gerwen playing?

All eyes will be on Michael van Gerwen at the Darts Masters this week. That’s because he’s looking to win a fifth straight title here. Only James Wade and Phil Taylor (now retired) have won this tournament apart from MVG.

Van Gerwen is a tiny 1.06 to beat Jonny Clayton in his first-round match. That battle is set to get underway on Friday evening and you can watch and bet on all the action with Unibet!

It’s not worth backing on MVG to win because his odds are so slim. But you could certainly get some joy backing on the final result. It is first to 10 legs in the Darts Masters first round and that suits MVG. He is 5.60 to win this match 10-3, and 5.30 to win 10-5.

Those are two viable scores and remember, the odds will change in-play while the match is on. So you don’t have to make that bet just yet!

Who could make the final?

Let’s assume Van Gerwen is making the Darts Masters final. That’s the top half of the draw sorted. So who could meet the Dutchman from the lower half?

Rob Cross is the second seed and his form is awfully flighty. He only reached the fourth round of his World Championship title defence in December, and generally endured a miserable time of the major oches through 2018 (bar that Worlds win!).

Cross is 4.50 to make the final but there are better bets out there. Michael Smith reached the Worlds final before losing to MVG and was also the Premier League Darts finalist last year. He has a reasonably routine first-round match against Ian White on Saturday, while he can be confident heading into a quarter-final with the inconsistent Peter Wright or Adrian Lewis.

Smith is 5.00 to make the final and that’s a decent bet.

The third prospect worth considering is James Wade. After all, he won the Darts Masters in 2013. Wade was a quarter-finalist last year and has twice reached the semi-finals too. His Masters record is only bettered by MVG and Taylor. And at 14.50 to reach the final, that is a strong bet.
