Royal Ascot WT

WE have five days of top-class racing at Royal Ascot 2023, with all 35 races being shown on ITV Racing.

There is so much to look forward to with Frankie Dettori in his final season having a very strong book of rides, whilst the international challenge has to be taken as seriously as ever with two Australian challengers in the King’s Stand Stakes with Coolangatta and Cannonball, who will be looking to follow up on Nature Strip’s brilliant performance last year.

Both Aidan O’ Brien and Willie Mullins could have an excellent Royal Ascot 2023, with Aidan O’ Brien surely fancying the chances of River Tiber and Paddington in the Coventry and St James’ Palace Stakes respectively, whilst Willie Mullins has Bring On The Night in the Ascot Stakes and Vauban in the Copper Horse Stakes. It could easily be a big Tuesday for favourites.

Enjoy a fascinating and exciting start to Royal Ascot 2023 whether on course or watching #athome on ITV Racing.

Cheers!

2.30 Ascot – Queen Anne Stakes Group 1 (1m Str)

Modern Games is taken to beat key rival Inspiral, who if on her first start in 2023 shows her impressive Coronation form, then she will be hard to beat, particularly getting the allowance, however you have got to be right on your A-game here and Modern Games has the added advantage of fitness as well as consistency. Modern Games looked right back to form in the Lockinge to take his fifth Group 1 after not showing his best form at Keenelend on seasonal debut. The Lockinge was a strongly-run mile, which suited his style and this race looks like it is going to be run in a very similar fashion. He’ll probably concede first run to Inspiral but can pick her up late in the Queen Anne to take this for the Charlie Appleby team who are right back to form.

3.40 Ascot – King’s Stand Stakes Group 1 (5f)

Mitbaahy has the overall profile to suggest that is steadily improving, and that we may not have seen the best of him yet, so there is optimism that he can take the step up today to finish in the places. He did enough to win a Group 3 at Newbury last year and has a similar chance to Manaccan on that form, and it’s interesting that Roger Varian considered him good enough for a crack at the Temple Stakes on his reappearance. He appears well held by Dramatised on that form but as is often the case at Haydock, the ground/draw played a part, with the first four home drawn in the highest stalls so Mitbaahy’s effort in fifth, the best of the rest, from stall 3 is marked up. A strong pace will help and it isn’t hard to see him running on (he is dropped out tactically) through the beaten horses in the final furlong to grab a place at a double figure price.

4.20 Ascot – St James’s Palace Stakes Group 1 (1m Rnd)

Cicero’s Gift is a very exciting prospect as he showed last time out at Goodwood when beating Kolsai by 5½ lengths (finished close third to Regal Reality at Epsom next time out) , though he certainly has to step up considerably to fend of 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean and the Irish 2,000 winner.

Paddington, who looked strong last time out.  However, this race looks more open than the betting suggests and this part of the three-year-old division seems to lack a superstar currently so Cicero’s Gift who was visually impressive at Goodwood can make it four from four.

5.00 Ascot – Ascot Stakes Heritage Handicap (2m 4f)

Calling The Wind makes plenty of each way appeal, with the favourite Bring On The Night, who finished second in this last year, having very strong claims at the head of the market. Calling The Wind has an excellent Ascot record, which reads 12323, and that includes placings at both the last two Royal Ascot meetings in the Queen Alexandra over a longer trip of 2m 5½f. A wide-ish draw in stall 13 isn’t ideal but he was second in the 2021 Queen Alexandra from stall 18 (of 20, and winner Stratum came from 20, so it can be done) and he’d have got a bit closer in the Chester Cup last time but for a bit of trouble in the latter stages. Billy Loughnane steals 3lb off his back, and all looks set for another big effort.

Novel Legend has been in my tracker, having won at Kempton in March and then he beat Call My Bluff easily at Newbury in April. On his latest start last month he ran well at Chester to finish second to Zinc White (reopposes here), when giving every impression this extra distance will suit this likeable type, who will reward each way players here with the excellent Danny Muscutt in the plate.

6.10 Ascot – Copper Horse Handicap (1m 6f)

Ruling Dynasty (nap) is having his only fourth career start and won in good style on his sole appearance this season at Haydock when beating King Of The Plains by six and a half lengths on quick going. He gave every impression that this step up in trip is well within in his compass and this imposing individual can run a big race.
