THE final day of the Ayr Gold Cup meeting will see typically competitive renewals of the Silver Cup and Gold Cup. These two handicaps are high on quality as ever and there will be a bumpy crowd at this popular course.

1.55 Ayr – Doonside Cup Stakes Listed Race (1m 2f)

Phantom Flight absolutely bolted up in the finale of the York Ebor Festival when beating Spirit Dancer by five lengths, storming clear from the two-furlong marker to deliver a much-improved performance. This three-year-old colt was unraced as a two-year-old, winning on his second start at Redcar and he then followed up at Haydock in May. Phantom Flight then finished third to St Leger favourite New London in a handicap at Newmarket ahead of his success at York.

He has won on quick going as well as good to soft and this unexposed type can strike again as he steps up in grade.

2.15 Newbury – Dubai International Airport World Trophy Stakes (Group 3)

Mitbaahy (nap) can bounce back to form after never looking like he enjoyed Goodwood in the King George Qatar Stakes when marked up in my Unibet blog. He had previously looked very smart after easily winning a listed race at Sandown when beating Live In The Dream and then looked unlucky at the Eclipse meeting in the Group 3 Sprint Stakes when second to Raasel. Mitbaahy can come out on top here in Group 3 company for the Roger Varian team who are in good form.

2.30 Ayr – Ayr Silver Cup Handicap (6f)

Snash won over course and distance in July on good ground and there was nothing wrong with his midfield finish in the Great St Wilfrid when not getting the best of runs last time out. This four-year-old has hit form at the right time and has a strong winning chance.

Strike Red ran on Thursday evening at Newcastle when finishing fifth behind Temple Bruer after stumbling badly at the start and then was doing all his best work at the finish. That was Strike Red’s first appearance for nearly three months and if the Richard Fahey team decide to run here then he is definitely worth an each way wager.

3.25 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Handicap (1m 2f)

Ottoman Fleet was unraced as two-year-old and finished runner-up on debut to stablemate Natural World here at Newbury. He then won a Listed race at Newmarket over this trip beating Zain Sarinda and Savvy Victory. Ottoman Fleet was running on well at the finish after stumbling when leaving the gate and certainly picked up well on that occasion to produce a taking performance. On his latest start at Royal Ascot in the King Edward VII Stakes Group 2 over one mile four furlongs he wouldn’t settle and still looked green when finishing fourth to Changingoftheguard. This talented Sea The Stars gelding drops back to one mile two furlongs, which looks sure to suit and he has been found a good opportunity to win in handicap company.

3.40 Ayr – Ayr Gold Cup Handicap (6f)

Motagally is having his third start for Scott Dixon, who has his yard in good form, after leaving Charlie Hills’ yard when sold by Shadwell in August. Motagally found the Beverley Bullet a hot contest for his first appearance in 2022 and then ran well in the Portland Handicap at the St Leger meeting last Sunday when fifth behind Chipstead on soft going, which wouldn’t have suited him. This looks a good opportunity for Motagally off a mark of 94. as he was fourth in the 2021 renewal off 98, won over this trip in 2020 and the yard are noted for the quick reappearances of their sprinters.

Lucky Man put up a career best performance at York earlier this month to score his third success of 2022 for the Richard Spencer yard. In his ten starts this season he has only finished out of the first three on two occasions. Admittedly he is more exposed than many, but he steadily keeps improving and this thoroughly genuine individual will run well for each way players.
