DAY Two of the July Festival features the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes Group 1 with the very likeable Porta Fortuna heading the market, with Running Lion and my selection the progressive A Lilac Rolla next in the betting.

This introduction is being written early on Thursday morning and the forecast for Thursday is now dry and Friday looks much better than earlier in the week, with 1.2mm of rain predicted for Friday, though temperatures are not expected to get above 15C.

There has been so much rainfall recently and with temperatures below the seasonal average this looks very much a case of still suiting those runners who are effective in the softer conditions.

Enjoy whether at the July Festival or watching #athome on ITV Racing or Racing TV.

Cheers

1.50 Newmarket – Heritage Handicap (1m 2f)

Involvement looks ready for this step up to 10f, both on the visual impression – a staying-on seventh in the Britannia last time out, and on breeding, with dam Lady Of Dubai an influence for stamina. He’d run well on soft ground the time before when second to Nellie Laylax, who herself had won her previous start and is clearly going the right way, and the two pulled well clear of anything else, making the form look solid. There should be more to come from Involvement and with the yard hitting top gear, he holds an excellent each-way chance.

2:25 Newmarket – Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes Group 2 Fillies (6f)

Tales Of The Heart, a winner on debut at Kempton (form working out well, second an easy winner next time) and then she took a big step up on that when second to Celandine in the Listed Empress here a fortnight ago. She already looks in need of another furlong, but this should be strongly-run, and this slower ground will suit her more than some of those near the head of the market.

3.00 Newmarket – Trophy Heritage Handicap (1m 6f)

Beamish has run a little better than his form figures suggest this season, needing his first start at Newbury (for new trainer Archie Watson) after 18 months away from the track, and whilst his down-the-field effort in the Copper Horse Handicap at Ascot wasn’t immediately promising, it looks better when you realise how badly hampered he was at the first turn as all those drawn in high-numbered stalls come across the field and squeeze the inside up. He’ll get some cut in the ground here, which he’ll enjoy, is starting to come down the weights, should strip fitter again here.

3.35 Newmarket – Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes Group 1 (1m)

A Lilac Rolla (nap) looks the obvious alternative to Porta Fortuna, with ground doubts over quite a few of these if it’s still on the soft side. Unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile, she did well to beat Kitty Rose in the Priory Belle at Leopardstown in the heavy on her reappearance and then lost nothing in defeat when second to Fallen Angel in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh on her latest start. She’s the one proven with some cut in the ground and there is plenty of progression to come.

5.20 Newmarket – Blake-Turner Solicitors Handicap (5f)

No Half Measures continued on her upward trajectory with an excellent third to Pilgrim in the Prince Of Holyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot when first home in her group. She had finished fifth on his previous start in a Listed contest, having won three on the bounce and a return to a Class 3 all works in her favour.
