an improving filly

THE final day of the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket, the home of flat racing,  features the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes Group 1 for the fillies, with the colts running in the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes Group 1 both over six furlongs.

The Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap run over a distance of one mile one furlong has only seen one favourite succeed in the last ten years and that was Lord North, who looked the winner from three furlongs out as he weas travelling so smoothly. He has recently been retired after a brilliant career.

Enjoy whether at a racecourse or watching #athome on ITV Racing and Racing TV.

I’m looking forward to heading to Newmarket tomorrow so see you there.

Cheers!

1:15 Newmarket – EBF ‘Jersey Lily’ Fillies’ Nursery (7f)

Naina, who just keeps improving with each start, has developed a lovely habit of winning races, is proven on soft ground having taken a maiden at Brighton earlier in the year and won like a horse that still had something in hand at Yarmouth last week. Her one poor run came on the July Course when she went off too quickly (all the front-runners fell in a hole late) but bar that, she’s just an improving filly that deserves her place here.

Unibet are paying MONEY BACK as CASH if your pick finishes 2nd or 3rd in this race!

1:50 Newmarket – Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes Group 2 (1m)

Wimbledon Hawkeye (nap) has a question to answer over soft ground but there’s no doubting that this step up to a mile will suit, and as he gains experience and improves, he just looks a very good horse.

He ran a stormer in the Acomb Stakes at York last time, splitting The Lion In Winter and Ruling Court, a terrific effort, to finish second. The front three were well clear of the fourth and fifth, who duly gave the form a boost when running third and fourth respectively in the Flying Scotsman at Doncaster next time. Will keep progressing and one very much for next year.

Unibet are SUPER BOOSTING the price of every runner in this race!

2:25 Newmarket – Juddmonte Cheveley Par Stakes Group 1 (6f)

Babouche is the one to beat here as she might just appreciate the softer conditions and her half-sister Drinks loved some cut, so the indicators are a little better for her than Lake Victoria as to the ground. Babouche secured a hat-trick of wins when beating Whistlejacket (Unibet 5/6 favourite to take the Juddmonte Middle Park) in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh.

3.40 Newmarket – Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap (1m 1f)

Mr King was first marked up at the York Ebor meeting on his first start in England after being sold after an impressive success at Naas in June over a mile.

He raced over the same trip at the Knavesmire, and he was held up as he usually is, however, it was not a day to come from off the pace and he finished seventh after doing all his best work at the finish. This performance was overlooked, and Mr King went straight in my notebook for the Cambridgeshire, although he never looked comfortable at Doncaster next time out on St Leger Day and you have to put a line through that performance, as he returned to form last Saturday at Ayr when again given plenty to do when a good third to Aragon Castle.

Mr King has won over one mile two furlongs in Ireland, which is an important factor in the Cambridgeshire, and he certainly handles soft ground with a dry forecast helping his chance.   He certainly has what appears to be a good draw in stall 33, with the booking of Sean Levey a positive move.

Unibet are paying TWO EXTRA PLACES in this race!

Under Siege will need like many in the field to handle the conditions, though his sire Wooton Bassett won on the very soft at Longchamp. He will also need to get the trip as he runs over a mile for the first time with every indication in the way he has been finishing his races that Under Siege will be fine and could really benefit from the step up in distance.

Under Siege was second to Economics back in April and then ran well behind Lead Artist at York in May when doing all his best work late on. Under Siege won at Chelmsford two starts ago and then messed up the start at Chester last time out when having a favourable draw so ignore that run.

This three-year-old certainly has potential off a favourable mark of 94 in only his third start in a handicap and his style from coming from off the pace works in the Cambridgeshire as could a draw of 35.

Paddy The Squire had his first start of 2024 at Hamilton in August over this trip running a blinder to be second to Theoryofeverything and then at Chester did well to finish third when hampered. This four-year-old colt has a really good attitude, will relish conditions and has strong each way claims.
