DAY 5 of the Qatar Goodwood Festival unfortunately looks likely to be very wet with 14mm forecast as of Friday afternoon. This is clearly going to favour those runners who handle soft going as the course on Friday was soft and good to soft in places.
The feature is the Stewards’ Cup with a full field of 28 runners and as ever it will be interesting to see which side of the draw this will favour, as either low numbers or high numbers has generally been the advantage in the last ten years.

1.50 Goodwood – Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (6f)
Music Society apart from a moderate effort at York last time out, had been a model of consistency this season, hitting the places on his three previous starts. He has twice run in this, blowing out on quick ground in 2020 but in 2021, on his favoured soft surface, travelled beautifully into the race but stall 4 did for his chances, with the first three home all coming from high draws, but faring best of the rest. Music Society is only 1lb higher than that effort here and must have a good chance, with the rain coming Saturday morning a plus to his chances. Stall 9 is absolutely fine and gives him strong each way claims.

2.25 Goodwood – Summer Handicap (1m 6f)
Typewriter isn’t quick, as demonstrated by her staying-on fourth in the Queen Alexandra last time, but this distance of one mile six furlongs here ought to be enough of a stamina test given the ground. Typewriter might not have much left on her mark, but she is consistent, seemed to handle the track on just her second start here and with the yard having a good week, looks solid each-way material here.

Torcello will love the softening ground, has won at Goodwood and is worth a small each way wager.
3.00 Goodwood – Qatar Lillie Langry Stakes Group 2 (1m 6f)
Free Wind holds a class advantage over these and is taking a big step down after trying to mix it with Pyledriver and company in the Hardwicke last time, and is, of course, back against her own sex today. Even if Free Wind repeats her Hardwicke fifth form, she should be good enough, and the only question mark is the ground, as it was called soft when she won the Lancashire Oaks last year, which suggests she’ll be fine on it, and she will take some beating here.

3.35 Goodwood – Stewards’ Cup Heritage Handicap (6f)
Albasheer (nap) is having only his tenth career start, having been off the course in 2022 and having only run twice in 2021. As a juvenile in 2020 he was beaten four and half lengths behind St Mark’s Basilica in the Dewhurst Stakes and clearly he is very talented with surely has a big Handicap win ahead of him. In the Wokingham he came from the back of the field to finish 11th to stablemate Saint Lawrence (not running here interestingly from the same yard) travelling very quickly late on and would have been much closer with an earlier move. At the Curragh on his latest appearance, he made a good move from last to first on what turned out to be the wrong side of the course with all the action on the nearside. He doesn’t have form on soft going yet is likely to be suited by these conditions as his sire Shamardal won on soft on two occasions from seven starts.

Apollo One has form figures of 322 in 2023 and ran a terrific race in the Wokingham when second to Saint Lawrence after always being near the front of the action. He was second to Badri back in June at the Epsom Derby Festival, with a third on good to soft to Probe at Newmarket on seasonal debut.
Apollo One can once again be near the head of affairs, which is an advantage here and stall 27 looks a very good draw.
