THE race of day two at Royal Ascot 2021 is the Prince of Wales’s Stakes Group 1 at 4.20 with the filly Love making her first appearance of 2021 in a fascinating and much anticipated renewal. This four-year-old will have to see off a very strong challenge from Lord North, who is looking to retain his crown for the John & Thady Gosden team, with Frankie Dettori in the plate. In 2021, Lord North has had one start in Meydan back in March, where he won in really eye-catching style, whilst Love’s stablemate Armory comfortably won the Huxley Stakes Group 2 at Chester last month. These three are very tightly grouped at the top of the betting and I take the filly Love to win one of the races of Royal Ascot 2021.
Earlier on in the Queens Vase at 3.05 where I fancy Ruling, I haven’t passed by the opportunity to have a small each-way wager on Pied Piper Unibet 50/1 trained by John & Thady Gosden. Pied Piper looks overpriced and has finished second and third on two starts this season.

3.05 Ascot – Queens Vase Group 2 (1m 6f)
Ruling for the Joseph O’Brien team is having his first start over this trip and this looks sure to suit as he is by Camelot and has shaped visually on all three of his runs to date as if a staying trip is required. His form is very solid, having twice finished behind the useful The Mediterranean over one mile four furlongs. Ruling looks genuine and progressive, is nicely drawn too in stall four.

3.40 Ascot – Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) 1m
Onassis (each way) won the Sandringham last year at 33/1 and can chase home the favourite Lady Bowthorpe, who finished second behind Palace Pier in the Lockinge. Onassis continued to progress after her Sandringham success winning Listed contests at both Chantilly and Goodwood before finishing a good sixth to Glen Shiel in the Champion Sprint Stakes at Ascot. Onassis was winning on seasonal debut last year and is looking to do the same in 2021, with four-year-olds winning nine of the last ten renewals. Hayley Turner once again takes the ride for Charlie Fellows.

4.20 Ascot – Prince of Wales’s Stakes Group 1 (1m 2f)
Love (nap) makes her first appearance of 2021 and she will have to be at her very best to beat Lord North and her stablemate Armory. Her trainer Aidan O’ Brien has always thought very highly of Love and I’m sure she is ready for this Group 1 on her favoured quick ground. Last season she was a regular in my Unibet column, as she was tipped for the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks, which she won in great style by four, nine and five lengths respectively. She was targeted at the Arc, however was withdrawn at the forfeit stage because of the soft going.
Love is supremely talented and will win her first Group 1 of 2021.

5.00 Ascot – Royal Hunt Cup Heritage Handicap (1m)
Brunch was marked up in my five Unibet ante-post each way Royal Ascot selections piece last week. Following declarations I’m very keen on his chances from stall 25, with high numbers doing well in recent years. This four-year-old has delivered two good performances this season in big field handicaps, with his career record to date with 14 plus runners in handicaps at 1122. Back in March he was second in the Unibet Lincoln at Doncaster and Brunch was then just pipped on the line by Kynren at York last month after being slow leaving the stalls.
Brunch has the right profile for the Royal Hunt Cup with only two starts in 2021 and four-year-olds have a good record too. He has won on good and good to firm so the forecast quick going will suit.

Astro King, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, is a four-year-old colt by Kingman, who has a strong chance here. On his two starts this season he has narrowly beaten the likely favourite Finest Sound at Nottingham back in April and then wasn’t best placed in Thirsk’s Hunt Cup in May when given enough to do but finished off very well and might have got there in a few more strides. He looks really genuine, and this straight mile looks tailormade for him with a good draw in stall 27.

5.35 Ascot – Windsor Castle Stakes Listed (5f)
Ruthin can win here for Wesley Ward and Frankie Dettori, having been rerouted from the Queen Mary in which Wesley Ward has favourite Twilight Gleaming. Ruthlin looked mighty impressive when winning her only career start back in April at Keeneland in a really good time. She looked inexperienced at times and is bound to have improved considerably in that time. We know that Wesley Ward loves to target these races and providing the conditions stay quick then Ruthin has a really good chance.
