THE Ayr Gold Cup is the feature of their three-day meeting and with the Silver Cup earlier on the card everyone is always keen to see which side of the draw is more favourable.

In the Gold Cup in recent times it has suited the middle to high numbers, whilst the Silver Cup has about those drawn low.

As I have written previously in 2024, I decided to ignore recent stall trends as with Royal Ascot these didn’t apply in the main and most recently at Haydock in the Sprint Cup this was about the unfashionable low numbers.

There is an excellent card at Newbury and good racing at Newmarket too.

Enjoy whether at a racecourse or watching #athome on ITV Racing.

Cheers

2:05 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Autumn Handicap (1m 5½f)

Ithaca’s Arrow, who made up into a useful hurdler last season and has translated that improvement back to the Flat, going very close at Goodwood last month and then making short work of his opponents at Chester last week, coming right away for a very easy victory over a furlong shorter than today’s trip. He’s clearly in good heart and although this is a tougher assignment, he still looks the each-way value in the race.

2:25 Ayr – Silver Gold Cup Handicap (6f)

Aramram (nap) for Unibet Ambassador Richard Hannon is progressing very nicely and this three-year-old colt can run a big race. He won back in May at Nottingham; however, it is his most recent effort you need to take note of at Doncaster last Sunday when given a cool ride to take the lead in the final strides to beat Archduke Ferdinand by a neck over this trip. That was a cosy victory and given he comes here unpenalised for that success he must have a good chance as an each way play at a minimum.

Jenever is an interesting contender who has been mainly campaigned over the minimum distance in recent times, whilst I usually look for consistent form at six furlongs (has won over this distance earlier in his career) this looks the right time to step back up in trip.

Jenever won at Sandown back in June over five furlongs beating Brave Nation and then was a good half a length second to the smart Lil Guff over the same distance at the Esher track. If Jenever is fit enough on his first start for nearly two months, then he appears to be overlooked in the market.

2:40 Newbury – Dubal Duty Free Handicap (1m 2½f)

Mustazeed can be a slow starter, which is a concern, but there’s no doubting that Newbury, with some cut, brings out some of his better form, with two course and distance wins from five starts at the track. He’s looking well handicapped against the likes of Fantasy Master, who beat him ¾l at Ascot two starts ago but Mustazeed finds himself 12lb better off today, which you’d fancy is enough to turn the tables. He wasn’t on his best behaviour at Goodwood last time, looking less than keen to go into the stalls and a slow start again cost him any chance, but he still shaped as if in form and he could easily bounce back here.

3:35 Ayr – Gold Cup Handicap (6f)

Korker is a slow starter as we know, yet we also know he has loads of ability. He might not have won this season; however, his last two appearances have given plenty of encouragement that he could take the Ayr Gold Cup. He ran really well when second behind Rage Of Bumby in July at York and then on his recent performance in a Listed contest at the same course he was a two and half lengths third after having to switch late on behind the very smart Quinault who is heading for Group company. Korker is in the best form of the season so far and you can expect a big run.

Pilgrim has been running over the minimum trip mainly and showed his wellbeing when twice winning in June, including in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot by half a length from Blue Storm in June: He wasn’t seen then until the Ebor when never getting in the race after being given far too much to do in the race won by Jm Jungle. He is better than that and has strong each way claims.
