The Qatar Goodwood Festival looks set at the time of writing early Monday morning for some rain on Tuesday in the afternoon and much heavier on Wednesday. On day one to brighten the spirits the headlining race the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes Group 1 has a cracking lineup, including Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami Unibet 5/2 ridden by Frankie Dettori, who gave this unbeaten four-year-old son of Frankel an excellent ride on only the gelding’s fourth career start! The Ascot Gold Cup second Coltrane Unibet 5/2 reopposes here and once again will represent strong opposition, with Eldar Eldarov who was disappointing at Ascot in the field too, as is Emily Dickinson, who has since won a Listed race. Giavellotto, who I first marked up in the St Leger last year is still improving as he showed in the Yorkshire Cup and could easily step up once again, whilst my each way selection Lone Eagle looking sure to go well.
Earlier on Kinross (see below) can follow up on his third to Shaquille in the July Gup in the Lennox Stakes Group 2, having taken this race in 2021.

1.40 Goodwood – Handicap (5f)
Vintage Clarets is a likeable type who has been in good form with wins at Chester and Newcastle, whilst on his latest start he ran well to finish third to The Big Board at Ascot (Dream Composer, unplaced and hampered) . He is ground versatile, stall 8 is a good draw and Vintage Clarets will go well on his first start at Goodwood.

Dream Composer is generally consistent, and the ground should be ideal for him.  At Ascot last time he had a slow start and then was hampered too after two furlongs, however, concentrate on his Goodwood form, which reads 210213, with the bad run coming on quick ground. Dream Composer is drawn towards the middle, which should give him plenty of room to make his late challenge, which was not the case the last time he raced here in May when third, as he was caught in a pocket as the field moved over to stands rail.

2.50 Goodwood – Chesterfield Cup Handicap (1m 2f)
Soto Sizzler hasn’t been seen since finishing an encouraging third to Bad Company back in April at Epsom.He has performed well after a break previously and has won at Goodwood too. The Gary Moore yard are in very good form and Soto Sizzler is worth an each way wager.

3.25 Goodwood – Nicholson Gin Vintage Stakes Group 2 (7f)
Haatem (nap) for Unibet Ambassador Richard Hannon hasn’t done a lot wrong on his last two starts with a close fifth in the Coventry at Royal Ascot and then although no match for the very exciting City Of Troy in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket, he was three lengths clear of the rest of the field. Haatem handled Goodwood absolutely fine on good to soft when third on debut and has strong claims.

4.00 Goodwood – Lennox Stakes Group 2 (7f)
Kinross will thrive on the fact that there is plenty of pace on here, which is going to suit the 2021 winner, who ran up to form when third to Shaquille in the July Cup last time, when looking in need of the step back up to this trip. He is a proven Group 1 performer that goes on pretty much all ground, but some cut is ideal, and should be hard to beat.

4.35 Goodwood – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes Group 1 (2m)
Lone Eagle has a strong each way shout in a cracking renewal of the Goodwood Cup on making his first start at two miles. He ran better than his finishing position suggested in the Ascot Gold Cup, travelling as well as anything turning in where he led and looked a threat but patently didn’t get the two miles four furlongs trip, and faded out of it in the final furlong to finish ninth to Courage Mon Ami. As Ascot he was stepping up from one mile five and half furlongs to the Ascot Gold Cup distance for the first time, so this definitely looks the right decision regarding trip and Long Eagle is twice a winner at Goodwood, so handles the track well, particularly with a bit of juice in the ground.
