Day Two Ebor Festival

THE feature on day two of the Ebor Festival is the Yorkshire Oaks Group 1 which originally had Bluestocking as favourite, who instead lined up in the Juddmonte International on the Tuesday. This still looks a fascinating renewal though, with stablemates Inspiral and Queen Of The Pride, whilst You Got To Me who beat Content in the Irish Oaks take each other on again. These are the first four in the market and they are very tightly matched.

Queen Of The Pride was very impressive in the Lancashire Oaks, although this double hasn’t been achieved since 1998. You Got Me has the edge on Content for the three-year-olds and is just my selection for this Group 1.

Enjoy whether at York or watching #athome on ITV Racing and Racing TV.

Cheers!

2:25 York – Harry’s Half Million By Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes (6f)

Arizona Blaze has to carry the 7lb penalty for winning the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh back in May but since then he’s improved, and, from what looks an advantageous draw in stall 3, he can give the weight away today.

Third in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, when running on his own on the stands rail he showed lots of commitment, whilst his run in the Railway Stakes on his next start came too quickly and that is easily forgiven. He quickly put that appearance behind him when third in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes last time, whilst this form has since been franked by Whistlejacket winning the Prix Morny, and with his attitude and quality of group form point to him being the one to beat.

3.00 York – Clipper Handicap (Heritage Handicap) 1m

New Image (nap) won at the Shergar Cup meeting when caught in a pocket and managed late on to get out to beat Yantarni by a short head on his first start over this distance. This followed a second in the Moët & Chandon International over seven furlongs at the same course when he couldn’t quite peg back Northern Express after hanging right-handed. This four-year-old has won four of his eight starts in 2024, with places in the other races and this likeable type, who is on an upward trajectory, looks sure to go well.

Mr King was campaigned as a three-year-old last season over trips above a mile and won over one mile two furlongs at Roscommon. This season on his last three starts he has been dropped back to a mile with a victory in June at Naas by 1½ lengths from Barbapapa, when challenging from off the pace and going away smoothly at the finish. There was plenty to like in terms of potential and he was subsequently sold in mid-July and has his first start for his new connections. Mr King will need to put up a career best performance in this type of company, however this four-year-old has the scope to make this improvement over what is his ideal trip and is worth an each way play.

3:35 York – Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1) 1m 4f

You Got to Me keeps progressing as she goes up in trip, and whilst she tanked off in front at Royal Ascot in the Ribblesdale, setting fractions that were simply too quick (but all the same, not beaten far in the end). She was given a much more patient ride in the Irish Oaks and the way she was strong at the finish when beating Content suggests she’ll probably get further in time. On the figures she’s as good as anything here, the 9lb she receives from Emily Upjohn (disappointing last time) and Queen Of The Pride putting her right there, and she can continue her progression again today.

4:45 York – sensory-junction.co.uk Autism Awareness EBF Stallions Nursery Handicap (7f)

Spell Master looked one of the better horses in the paddock at Goodwood last time and was arguably a bit unlucky not to have the whole cake to himself, instead having to split the pot with Hot Shott, who joined him right on the line after getting a much more patient ride than Spell Master did. That came after a protracted duel with the favourite Consolidation throughout the last two furlongs and after seeing him off, he didn’t quite have enough left in the tank to repel Hot Shott late. Still, a tremendous effort and one that showed he’s going the right way. He can score again.
