Cambridgeshire Meeting

THE final day of the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket has top class juvenile action and the Cambridgeshire Handicap, with a field of 24, is the jewel in the crown. There are plenty of three-year-olds with chances, including my selection Marhaba Ghaiyyath, with three-year-olds taking three of the last ten renewals.

The four-year-old Tribal Chief my other selection will be in the mix too and this age group has won four Cambridgeshire’s in the last ten years.

Enjoy whether at Newmarket or watching #athome on ITV Racing and Racing TV.

Cheers!

1:50 Newmarket -Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes Group 2 (1m)

Pacific Avenue (nap) has a chance in a Royal Lodge that looks more open than the market.

He was impressive when beating his long odds-on stablemate Wild Desert on the July course here in June. On his next start Pacific Avenue was caught in the final strides when beaten into fourth when made favourite for the Solario at Sandown last time. He still ran well, beaten only half a length in a good time figure, and he still looked far from the finished article. The ground and distance are in his favour, and he is going to progress again.

2:25 Newmarket – Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes Group 1 (6f)

Fitzella continues to improve and ran well in Deauville when second in a Group 2 to the very smart My Highness over seven furlongs and coming back down in trip at the Rowley Mile will be in her favour.

Fitzella run well at Royal Ascot in the Albany before beating Staya in the Princess Margaret Stakes (Group 3).

She will step up again from her Deauville performance and Fitzella will run a big race.

3:15 Haydock – Handicap (1m)

Fondo Blanco, who fully deserves a good handicap after finishing runner-up on four of his last five starts, and perhaps this step up to a mile is just what he’s been wanting.

He has run over seven furlongs on his last two starts, including finishing as a staying-on runner-up to Hickory, who is very much an Ascot specialist over this distance.

Fondo Blanco is ground versatile and has been found a good winning opportunity.

3.40 Newmarket – Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap (1m 1f)

Tribal Chief started his three-year-old campaign last season off a mark of 61 and is running here off a rating of 94. He delivered a career best at Goodwood last time out when beating Treble Tee, who is well fancied for the Cambridgeshire, though Tribal Chief looks sure to step up again.

Tribal Chief’s previous start was also at Goodwood when after being very slow leaving the gate and he did well to finish sixth to Rhoscolyn.

He has won over a mile and half a furlong at Epsom so is all good with this trip as is the ground. Tribal Chief has a strong chance from stall 20.

Marhaba Ghaiyyath is having his first start after a gelding operation on what will be his eighth appearance of the season, with two victories and three seconds so far in 2025. At York, on his latest start, he was given too much to do and finished three lengths behind Dain Ma Nut in a race where the winner was allowed a soft lead.

If you look at his previous performance at Goodwood when moving clear and then headed by Best Secret, he was a good second two and a quarter lengths clear of Fort George (reopposes) in third over a trip of one mile two furlongs, which is an important point over this Cambridgeshire trip on the Rowley Mile. Marhaba Ghaiyyath has won over a mile and a mile and half a furlong, with good to firm and good all suiting him.
