SATURDAY – WINCANTON
1:50 Mares Handicap Hurdle
Sunrise Ruby (Nico de Boinville)
She’s only a novice but it’s a very attractive race for her and she likes fast good which she’s likely to get tomorrow. Nico has always said that she’ll stay three miles but 2m5f around Wincanton will be perfect for the time being and she’s done nothing wrong both times this year so deserves to take her chance. We should have won with her last season but I think I forget to run her and then racing stopped so it’s probably my fault that she hasn’t won more than she has!
AINTREE
2:40 Handicap Hurdle
Call Me Lord (James Bowen)
We always said he had to go right handed but after testing the water last season, he ended up winning the Unibet International Hurdle at Cheltenham going the other way so at least we have a few more options available to us. However, this is a very good little race and you can make a case for all of them so it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top. We’re going back up to 2m4f which I think is probably his right trip nowadays and he’s in great form at home, although I do expect him to improve a little bit for the run.

SUNDAY – SANDOWN
1:15 Novices’ Handicap Chase
Igor (Sam Waley-Cohen)
I’ve been waiting to go over fences with him for a while and this looks the perfect starting point. Two and a half around Sandown will really suit and he’s always looked like a chaser who has schooled very well at home and won’t have any issues with the ground. He was in at Aintree but I just felt the stiffer track here will be more in his favour because he’s a big staying type of horse with a long galloping stride and I’m looking forward to start him off.
2:25 Intermedite Chase
Pym (Nico de Boinville)
He had a very good first year and didn’t do much wrong in the early part of last season but isn’t an enormous horse so the going is very important to him because he wouldn’t want to be slogging it around in bottomless ground, therefore the conditions at Aintree will be a big help. If The Cap Fits is obviously the one to catch, and he looked good at Ffos Las the other day, but we have plenty of experience in our favour which should count for a lot and I can see us more than likely making the running.
3:00 Handicap Hurdle
Mister Coffey (Nico de Boinville)
As you know he was very good the first time for us at Newbury but the second time (at Huntingdon) was a complete disaster as he just took off with Nico who had absolutely no control so we’re putting the hood on and hopefully he’ll relax much better because he can’t go off a zillion miles an hour again, but the track should give him plenty of time to switch off and to be honest with you he’s been very good at home. He has always shown me that he’s a very good horse and we’ve had no problems in his preparation at all but he’ll need to settle if he’s to show what he’s clearly capable of.
3:00 Veterans Chase
Gold Present (Nico de Boinville)
It’s a Veterans Chase and he gets in here off a nice mark of 148 which is his lowest for quite some time. We tinkered with his wind during the summer, which could help, and he’ll love the good ground so you’d be quite hopeful going into this because he goes well fresh and there’s lots in his favour.
4:00 Bumper
No Ordinry Joe (Nico de Boinville)
He was supposed to run at Newbury on Thursday but he’s a big topped horse and I just thought the ground may not have been completely to his liking so we made use of his entry here and hopefully the ground will be a little softer. We like him a lot and he’s a horse with a bright future.
