Longchamp
3.05pm – The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
Deirdre
Like many of these, Deirdre would prefer much better ground, but one of her better efforts did come when she finished third to Magical in the Champion Stakes in the soft last season. She clearly wasn’t at her best in the Nassau last time, a race she won last year, but she had earlier shaped pretty well when fifth in the Eclipse, and we know she has Group 1 talent. However, you would accept a place for her right now given the conditions, as she has plenty on here. We know what Enable brings to the party, and her draw in five means that Frankie doesn’t have to use her up early in the race, but I have a feeling that Stradivarius could be hard to beat with the emphasis firmly on stamina. His prep run was very good, the much softer ground here will be no problem here on the evidence of his Gold Cup win this year, and I think he has a lot going for him, possibly with the exception of his wide draw. The ground makes this a very open race, and the fact that the German Derby winner In Swoop is so high up in the betting after being easily beaten by Mogul in the Grand de Paris, underlines that. But, for me, Stradivarius wins it.
