NEWMARKET

1.50pm Newmarket: Communique is the form horse, unpenalised for his brace of Group 2 wins last season, but Trueshan was a very progressive horse last season and may improve past him. He beat a good horse at Newbury on his final start. Ideally, he would want more rain though.

2.25pm Newmarket: It’s a tough handicap but Good Birthday is the one for me in here. He ran an extraordinary race in the London Gold Cup early last season, where I thought he would have won had his run been rationed out more evenly. He was last turning in, and in front 2f out, and was still only beaten a length. He progressed well and can race off the same mark as when third in a strong Cambridgeshire, and gelding may have helped him, too

3pm Newmarket: Run Wild is the best filly on what we have seen so far, but this is quite clearly a very hard race to call. She could be bumping into the Oaks winner here given the profile of the opposition, but her Group race form is preferred about the potential of others.

3.35pm Newmarket: Aidan just relies on Love in here, and that tells me she is the best of their fillies by some way. And that has to make her the one to beat for me. In fact, I hear very good reports of her at home. She has some ground to make up with Quadrilateral in the Fillies’ Mile but the expected quicker ground here is very much in her favour and she just looks very solid. And it would concern me that Quadrilateral wears a first-time tongue-tie here, as that suggest she has been making a noise in her work. If that is the case, then that would worry me. Millisle is the other form horse on her Cheveley Park win but she has her stamina to prove, being a Starspangedbanner, and there is no hiding place for possible non-stayers over this straight mile. They get racing 4f out and that sorts out any with stamina issues. That isn’t a problem for Love. There isn’t a great deal of class depth to this race – as it stands anyway – as is evidenced by the fact that the 106-rated Cloaks Of Spirits is fourth favourite and the 80-rated Shimmering is a 16/1 chance. Love is a very obvious each-way play in here, and she also has a very good winning chance, too.

HAYDOCK

2.05pm Haydock: This looks Fanny Logan’s for the taking. She has form on quick and soft ground, and improved throughout last season, finishing off with a fourth in the Filly And Mare Turf at the Breeders’ Cup.

2.40pm Haydock: It will be interesting to see if Sangarius turns up after missing his intended engagement at Newmarket on Friday because of the ground. This is a warm race but I think this is the perfect set-up for Elarqam. I don’t buy into the fact that he was unlucky in the Juddmonte – if you have the horse under you, you tend to make the gaps – but that third to Japan and Crystal Ocean still makes him the one to beat. He also has form on all types of ground, too, and the stable is in good nick.

3.15pm:  Space Blues was disappointing at Meydan in March, but this looks a perfect opportunity for him to bounce back. His Group 1-placed efforts in France last season makes him the one to beat. Safe Voyage would come into the equation if they get a lot of rain, and one at a bigger price who could go well is the well-regarded Urban Icon, even though he carries a 3lb penalty. I have seen worse 14-1 chances.
