Newmarket

1.50pm

Spanish Mission

He stepped up a good deal when second to the progressive Private Secretary in the Cocked Hat over 1m3f at Goodwood in May and, although he has been off since, he is a lightly-framed colt so fitness shouldn’t be an issue here. He won over 1m2f at two, so I don’t envisage this 1m5f being a problem for him. I think Eagles By Day is definitely the one to beat in here, though, and I actually sat on him at  Michael’s the other morning. He only really got going at the 2f pole when third in what looked a good King Edward VII, and he would have finished second in another few strides. You have to think this extra furlong will suit him, and he looks a deserved favourite to me.

Woven

There is not a lot of room for manoeuvre with his handicap mark, so hopefully the drop down to 6f will bring about some improvement. He does have plenty of speed, so it may not be an issue. He went up 1lb for his Newcastle second over 7f last time, but at least that shows he comes here in decent form, I guess.

Farewell Kiss

This Exceed and Excel filly has a decent pedigree but I haven’t sat on her, so I can’t tell you a lot about her. And Michael’s 2yos tend to come on a fair bit for the run, as do most juveniles, really.

5.10pm

Martineo

He has been running well over 6f, including when third here off this mark last time.  He doesn’t look to hold many secrets from the handicapper over sprint trips at the moment, so maybe the step up a mile could make him even more competitive. He has won over this trip in the past, so it’s an interesting enough move.
