TRENT Alexander-Arnold’s talent can’t be denied. The 26-year-old has registered the joint second most assists in Premier League history and is widely considered one of the most creative full backs in the history of the modern game. There’s a reason Real Madrid continue to be linked with him. 

As things stand, Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. That’s when his contract at Anfield will expire and speculation is mounting that Real Madrid will sign the England international as a free agent just like they did Kylian Mbappe this summer. The Santiago Bernabeu could be Alexander-Arnold’s home from next year.

Alexander-Arnold, however, would have to adapt his game to make this transfer work, otherwise the weaknesses that have prevented his development for England will come to the fore. As a creator, Alexander-Arnold’s ability is clear. As a natural defender, though, he can sometimes be a liability.

 

The way Real Madrid play requires a mobile right back to provide a safety net in defensive transition. This is the role Dani Carvajal has performed for a number of years, but he is now entering the twilight of his career at 32 and will miss the rest of the season through injury. Los Blancos need a new right back.

In possession, there’s no doubt Alexander-Arnold is good enough for Real Madrid. He fit in well as someone who can unlock an opposition defence with a threaded pass or find the top corner of the net with a freekick strike. Plus, a move to the Spanish capital would see Alexander-Arnold link up with England teammate and close friend, Jude Bellingham.

As a defender, though, Alexander-Arnold could be exposed on the right side of the Real Madrid backline. This is an area where the 26-year-old must improve. Until now, his defensive vulnerabilities have only been a major problem for England. Leaving Liverpool could thrust them into focus at club level too.

Carlo Ancelotti might have a tactical plan to harness Alexander-Arnold. He could be used in central midfield. Real Madrid currently have a Toni Kroos-shaped hole in the centre of their team and Alexander-Arnold could have the passing range to replace the legendary German. This could be where Ancelotti envisages him.

Another tactical plan could see Real Madrid adopt a back three with Alexander-Arnold deployed as a wing back high up the pitch. This could amplify his threat as a creative force while also masking his defensive deficiencies by having a right-sided centre back cover the space in behind him. 

Of course, Alexander-Arnold could choose to remain at Liverpool. The 26-year-old has been talked about as a future captain of the Anfield club having come through the youth academy. He is a hero for the Kop and could achieve plenty more as a Red. Arne Slot surely wants to keep Alexander-Arnold as a key part of his team going forward.

 

There could be other suitors for Alexander-Arnold too. Most clubs in Europe would jump at the chance to sign the 26-year-old who has more than proved himself at the elite level. Real Madrid are expected to make an offer, but there might be more than one contract on the table for Alexander-Arnold to choose between.

The allure of the Santiago Bernabeu and the biggest club in world football could, however, prove too strong for Alexander-Arnold to resist. At Real Madrid, he would be a Galactico. He would surely add to his collection of titles and trophies. And yet it could be a move that ultimately puts him in the firing line.
