Ayr Gold Cup Day

THE Ayr Gold Cup is the feature of their three-day meeting, and with the Silver Cup earlier on the card, everyone is always keen to see which side of the draw is more favourable.

At the St Leger meeting in the Portland Handicap, my selections didn’t handle the softer conditions, whilst in the Silver Cup and Gold Cup, the three runners below are proven in good to soft and soft.

Enjoy whether at Ayr or Newbury or watching #athome on ITV Racing.

Cheers

1:15 Ayr – Handicap (1m)

Northern Express (nap) is now 8lb lower than at the start of the season, and whilst it has taken some time to find his form in 2025, he looks ready to strike after his good two-lengths fifth to Bullet Point at York, when travelling well and not given a hard race. It is important to note too that this appearance was without his usual headgear, which is back on this time.

Northern Express is not ground dependent, and with a distinct lack of pace on here he can make the most of that from his good draw in stall 2.

2:25 Ayr – Silver Cup Handicap (6f)

Gweedore has been very lightly raced in the last two seasons, although it is clear that this eight-year-old retains all his enthusiasm, as he showed when we last saw him back in April.

He raced twice at Musselburgh that month, finishing second to Our Havana, and then ran well to be runner-up to Persuasion, which is good form.

Gweedore won on seasonal debut in 2022 and 2023 so he can go well after a break, and he finished third in the Ayr Gold Cup in 2023. Ground conditions will be fine for him,   and he again wears cheekpieces, having done so on his last start at Musselburgh.

3:00 Ayr – Firth Of Clyde Group 3 (6f)

Coming Attraction was second on debut at Goodwood and then won a maiden at Chelmsford in June by five lengths from Harlequin Angel, who won at Newmarket last month.

This Dark Angel filly then made all at Chester in August on good ground when finding plenty to win by a length and three-quarters and showed a good attitude too.

There’s more improvement to come and her dam Clem Fandango, won twice on good to soft, with Coming Attraction looking ready to make the step up in grade here.

3:15 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes Group 2 (6f)

Into The Sky won at Newbury on debut last month over six and a half furlongs, which might have been seen as an 80/1 fluke, given he took a keen hold and went on win by seven and a half lengths, yet he recorded a smart time figure, and this was the trainer’s first juvenile success of the season.

Into The Sky looks sure to improve again, and whilst his success was on good ground, his sire, Starman, was a winner on good to soft so you can expect him to adapt, and he looks sure to make another strong impression.

3:35 Ayr – Gold Cup Handicap (6f)

Fahrenheit Seven was sold in July, and this four-year-old has finished in the first four in all his twelve career appearances. He has won twice this season, with a victory in April at Pontefract over five furlongs with Dream Composer in second and on his last start back in June at Hamilton he beat Commanche Falls by two lengths on good ground.

Fahrenheit Seven has the speed, has run over seven furlongs too, and won at Epsom on good to soft. There is no doubt he has more improvement to come, and he will be fit and ready to go.

Solar Acclaim ran no sort of race at Ascot last time when probably not suited by the conditions, and if you put a line through that run, he has had a good season so far.

He won comfortably in the soft at Chester in June over six furlongs and then followed up at Yarmouth in July with a minimum trip success.

Solar Acclaim will be really effective in the conditions and, if returning to form, can reward each way players off a career high mark.
