The clock's ticking

THERE’S just one week of the summer transfer window left and there’s still a remarkable amount of business still to be completed by the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

Over £2.5 billion has already been spent on new signings by the Premier League, and that number will rise further as clubs rush through transfers. Here’s what every big club needs before the summer transfer window closes.

Arsenal

Ebere Eze was Arsenal’s seventh signing of the summer, bringing the Gunners’ spending in the transfer window to £280m. The North London outfit could spend even more if speculation over Piero Hincapie is to be believed, with Arsenal reportedly keen on adding the Ecuadorian defender from Bayer Leverkusen.

It could be argued Mikel Arteta now boasts the most complete squad in the Premier League. They have depth all over the pitch and it’s difficult to envisage what more they could do in the final week of the window besides move for another centre back. The likes of Jakub Kiwior and Reiss Nelson could leave the Emirates Stadium, though.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa have largely stood still this summer, paralysed by the limitations placed on them by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). This means Villa may have to sell players before they can buy again, which is a concern when Unai Emery’s team looks to have grown stale since the end of last season.

Christopher Nkunku has been mentioned as a potential target. The Frenchman would cover a variety of different attacking positions for Aston Villa with another Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson also linked. The targeting of Porto’s Samu Aghehowa suggests Villa see the forward line as a priority in the next week.

Chelsea

Despite signing eight new players for roughly £250m, Chelsea are still planning a few more transfers before the summer window closes. Primarily, the Stamford Bridge outfit hope to complete deals for Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons to round out their attacking ranks for the 2025/26 season.

Much of Chelsea’s business in the final week of the window will be focused on moving players out of their squad. Indeed, the Blues are reportedly open to offers for Axel Disasi, Jackson, Tyrique George, Nkunku and others. Sales, however, could free up funds to enter the market once or twice more with the defensive line a potential focus following Levi Colwill’s injury.

Liverpool

The Alexander Isak saga is still to be resolved, with Newcastle United still digging their heels in over their valuation of the want-away Swedish striker. While Isak would certainly strengthen Arne Slot’s team and make a statement about the champions’ ambition, it could be argued the Reds are in greater need of defensive reinforcements.

Marc Guehi has been linked with a move to Anfield. The England international has just one year left on his Crystal Palace contract and would give Liverpool some much-needed cover in central defence. Otherwise, the defending Premier League champions did a lot of their business earlier in the window.

Man City

Manchester City have spent over £350m on new signings in 2025, and they haven’t put away the chequebook just yet. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium to replace Ederson, who looks to be on his way out. This is despite the Italian international being notoriously shaky when playing out from the back, which Pep Guardiola will expect of him.

There could also be movement in the wide areas, with Savinho reportedly a target for Tottenham Hotspur. This would free up funds and a spot in Guardiola’s squad to target Rodrygo, who has been knocked down the pecking order at Real Madrid in recent times. City might have more summer business to conduct.

Man Utd

While Manchester United have spent over £200m upgrading their attack through the addition of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, their midfield remains an area of concern. Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton would both offer the physicality Ruben Amorim needs in the centre, but would cost upwards of £100m.

Questions also remain over Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens is expected to complete a move to Old Trafford before the end of the window, but could Manchester United find a more experienced shot-stopper? Could they get involved in the bidding for Donnarumma?

Newcastle

This summer has been a challenging one for Newcastle. Not only are the Magpies facing the possibility of losing Isak to Liverpool, they have also struck out on so many of their top targets. Yoane Wissa remains a player who could arrive at St James’ Park before the window closes, although negotiations with Brentford for the striker have dragged on for weeks.

Jorgen Strand Larsen is another forward believed to be on Newcastle’s radar, with a bid of £50m already rejected by Wolves for the Norwegian. Nathan Ake has also been tentatively linked with a move to the Northeast, but Newcastle may have competition from the likes of Everton and West Ham for the Dutch defender.

Tottenham

It could be a busy final week of the summer window for Tottenham Hotspur. At least, Spurs fans certainly hope it will be. Having struck out on Ebere Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White, Thomas Frank clearly needs a new attacking midfield, especially after the season-ending injury suffered by James Maddison during pre-season.

Spurs could also use a new left winger, having sold Son Heung-min to Los Angeles FC. The North London outfit have an interest in Hincapie but could lose out to Arsenal in the race for the Bayer Leverkusen defender’s signature. This has been the story of the summer for Tottenham.
