Bryan Mbeumo has a decision to make. The Cameroonian is facing a career crossroads with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both interested in signing the Brentford attacker this summer. Until recently, it seemed Mbeumo was on his way to United. Spurs, however, have since made their case.
It’s easy to see why there is such interest in Mbeumo. The 25-year-old was one of the most productive attacking players in the Premier League last season, registering 20 goals and seven assists in 38 games. Alongside Yoane Wissa, Mbeumo gave Brentford a sharper cutting edge than many bigger, and richer, rivals.
Mbeumo is clearly ready to take the next step in his career. He must pick his next club carefully, which is why he would be wise to join Tottenham Hotspur over Manchester United. The Cameroonian should’t allow himself to be the next high-potential player to put their career at risk by making the move to Old Trafford.
According to @WhoScored, Bryan Mbuemo had the highest average rating by a player outside the “Big Six” clubs 👀

In North London, Mbeumo would be reunited with Thomas Frank who was named as Tottenham’s new manager last week. The Dane has been hired to build on the foundations left behind by Ange Postecoglou and he would stand a better chance of doing that with Mbeumo in his squad. The pair were certainly good for each other at Brentford.
Of course, last season was a challenging one for Spurs as they finished 17th in the Premier League table. Postecoglou ultimately paid for this underperformance with his job, yet the Australian still managed to lead the North London club to Europa League glory, beating Manchester United in the final.
Whether they deserve it or not, Tottenham now have the platform of Champions League football to build on. Mbeumo could test himself against some of the strongest opponents in Europe by making the move to Spurs this summer. Manchester United, on the other hand, will be watching the Champions League on TV.
Frank’s approach is easy to define. Under the Dane’s stewardship, Brentford was one of the best quick transition teams in the Premier League. This approach suits Mbeumo, suggesting he would be able to find his best form for Spurs. He would upgrade Brennan Johnson on the right side of their attack.
Ruben Amorim’s approach, however, is harder to decipher. After arriving from Sporting CP last season, the Portuguese initially wanted to make Manchester United more energetic in and out of possession, but he quickly adopted a more pragmatic game plan as he struggled to get his ideas across.
There might not even be a place for Mbeumo in the Manchester United lineup. If Matheus Cunha is going to play as the left-sided number 10 in behind the centre forward in the 3-4-2-1 formation and Bruno Fernandes is going to play as the right-sided number 10 after rejecting a move to the Saudi Pro League, where will Mbeumo fit in?
At Spurs, there would be an air of familiarity for Mbeumo. He could stay in the same city. He could play for the same manager. He could operate in a similar system. It seems likely Frank will set up his Tottenham team in a 4-2-3-1 shape that would afford Mbeumo a lot of freedom down the right side to drift and pose a goal threat wherever he can find space.
Recent history is littered with examples of big-name, big-money players who have been ruined at Old Trafford. Spurs have made their own mistakes in the transfer market, but a move to North London this summer would be a significantly safer bet for Mbeumo. He could reach the next level in white, not red.
