Arne Slot

When Liverpool play, Mohamed Salah scores. That has certainly been the case recently, with the Egyptian currently scoring in each of his last eight matches in all competitions. Liverpool are flying on all fronts this season, and Salah drives them forward more than any other player.

Salah is the best player for the best team in the league. He might even be the best player in the world at this moment in time. The 32-year-old is putting together the best individual season in Premier League history, better than anything Erling Haaland, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry or anyone else every accomplished. The numbers speak for themselves. In the Premier League alone,

Salah has registered 41 goal involvements (25 goals and 16 assists) in just 27 games this season. The record for the most goal involvements in a single Premier League season (44) was set by Haaland two seasons ago. Salah is set to demolish it.

Arne Slot’s approach is getting the best out of the Egyptian. Under Jurgen Klopp, Salah was expected to do more out of possession. Liverpool pressed high up the pitch and Salah had to play his part. Sometimes this resulted in the wide attacker being further away from goal than was optimal.

With Slot now at the helm, though, Salah is being asked to get as close to goal as possible in every moment of the match. Liverpool are still an effective pressing unit, but the line of confrontation usually comes from the midfield. Against Manchester City on Sunday, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai were pushed high.

Salah was mainly out wide in space. Salah has also changed his game. The Egyptian winger has always been one of the most reliable finishers in the Premier League, but he has never been better as a creator than he is now. This is reflected in the impressive number of assists Salah has tallied with one third of the season still to play.

Now 32, most players would have allowed their physical level to dip. Salah, however, looks to be in the best shape of his career. He is hungry to win a second Premier League title and is playing with a ruthlessness and intensity that reflects the energy Liverpool have as a whole.

Salah is the epitome of Slot’s team. Their top goalscorer and their biggest difference-maker. Of course, Salah’s contract situation continues to rumble on in the background. As things stand, he will be a free agent this summer. Last month, Salah said he and the club were “far away from any progress” on a new deal and there hasn’t been any update since then.

This may be Salah’s last season as a Liverpool player. “Everybody wants him, including us,” said Slot when asked about Salah’s future with interest in the winger from Saudi Arabia. “We want him to extend of course as well – that is clear. I’m not surprised that Saudi want him but I wouldn’t be surprised if other countries want him as well.

He’s old enough and wise enough, and has done so many smart things in his career, that he will make the right decision for himself and, hopefully, for us as well.” If this season is to be a farewell, Salah is making memories that will last a long time. He was already a Liverpool legend. He is one of the greatest players to have worn the famous red shirt in the modern era. This season, though, Salah has reached an entirely new level. Not even the numbers fully illustrate how good he is right now.
