DAY one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Tuesday is certainly going to be glorious with a dry and warm forecast. The feature is the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes Group 1, with the Ascot Gold Cup winner Kyprios Unibet 8/15 heading the market after showing plenty of determination to follow up his 2022 success. Kyprios won this race in 2022 when beating Stradivarius with Trueshan third and at the time didn’t get all the credit he deserved. He looks hard to oppose here and Trueshan (see below) of the other contenders looks the one to chase him home after returning to form last time out.

1:50 Goodwood – Chesterfield Cup Handicap (1m 2f)
Tony Montana was third to Enfjaar (reopposes here) in the big handicap at York last month after meeting trouble in running and was making up ground all the way to the line. Earlier in the season Tony Montana won at Chester and Windsor ahead of never making a mark at Royal Ascot in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes.
Tony Montana ran at the 2023 Goodwood Festival over two furlongs further to finish fourth when not quite lasting home so this trip should be ideal and stall 12 looks a good draw.

Aerion Power has got his own ideas about things, but the form of his Nottingham win over Great Blasket two starts ago reads well – the runner-up was in the middle of a golden spell and won again next time out. Aerion Power run in the Royal Hunt Cup should be ignored from stall 1 after a slow start. He ran well on his only start at Goodwood when third here a couple of seasons ago, and if he’s in the mood for this, could easily reward each-way punters at a price from stall 15.
2:25 Goodwood – Vintage Stakes Group 2 (7f)
Electrolyte threw his chances of winning the July Stakes away beforehand with his paddock antics, having got very warm from quite an early stage and flashing his tail, looking very much like something was bothering him, and this didn’t go missed by punters, the horse drifting out to four times his morning price. If you concentrate on his earlier efforts, as his narrow defeat in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot by Rashabar reads very well and he won a debut too. This step up to seven furlongs should suit and he can bounce back.

3:00 Goodwood – Lennox Stakes Group 2 (7f)
Kinross (nap) can fend off English Oak, the real improver in the field, and there’s no doubting how impressive he was when winning the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, but winning a handicap is one thing, and a Group 2 quite another. English Oak strictly on ratings he’s plenty to do here, and Kinross,who never got involved in the July Cup at Newmarket but as he gets older, probably needs this seventh furlong, and can make the most this of slightly easier task. His record over seven furlongs is eight wins from fourteen starts and has been the winner of this two of the last three years (and only just touched off in the other).
There should still be a little juice left in the ground, and that can only help his cause.
3.35 Goodwood – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes Group 1 (2m)
Trueshan won the Goodwood Cup in 2021 and was a close third to Kinross in 2023. Trueshan coasted up in a Listed Race at Sandown earlier this month when always travelling easily and he showed his best form for some time running enthusiastically. The fact there is enough juice in the ground, even with the drying weather, to not make it too quick is in Trueshan’s favour and he must be the each way selection to chase him home Kyprios at a minimum.
