front-running

A busy Saturday of racing ahead with on the flat at Lingfield the Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes and the Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes. It will be interesting to see what pointers we have for Epsom at the end of the month.

As Ascot there is a typically competitive renewal of the Victoria Cup and I’m looking forward to seeing 7f specialist Hickory returning to Ascot, whilst Arabian Storm could run a big race.

Haydock Park have a typically competitive renewal of their Swinton Hurdle, with Boodles winner Lark In The Mornin’ currently favourite at Unibet 17/8 in a race with plenty of depth as ever as a maximum field of seventeen will line up.

Enjoy whether at a racecourse or watching #athome on ITV Racing.

Cheers

1.30 Ascot – Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap (1m 4f)

Youthful King didn’t get the best of luck at Newmarket last week, finding trouble just as the race was developing but to his credit he stuck on most willingly to the task and was staying on again up the hill after looking like he’d drop right away. He’s yet to win at 12f but keeps shaping like this trip will suit when it all finally drops right for him and has each way claims.

Unibet are paying MONEY BACK as CASH if your pick finishes 2nd or 3rd in this race!

2.40 Ascot – Lavazza & Ascot 10 Year Anniversary Victoria Cup Handicap (7f)

Hickory (nap) is becoming something of a standing dish in these 7f Ascot events but they suit his run style and he went very close to taking the International (tipped in my Unibet blog at 50/1) off a 2lb lower mark than last year, only failing by half a length to peg Baradar back in the latter stages. He came back from his winter break to run a cracker over this trip at Kempton last month when doing best of those held up from off the pace to finish second to Zero Carbon, who reopposes here.

The visor is being refitted after being left off on his return and he ran with a visor on his last three starts in 2023, including in the International on King George Day. Hickory has only ever raced over this trip and you get expect another big run at Ascot by this six-year-old who is having only his twelfth career start.

Arabian Storm has his best piece of form was on his penultimate appearance at the 2023 Guineas meeting over 7f when in Listed company he finished third beaten ¾ length by the smart Shouldvebeenaring, trained by Unibet Ambassador Richard Hannon. Arabian Storm led for much of the way and was headed late on after showing a good attitude as he tried to retain his lead. He was then off for 11 months and returned to action at Kempton in late March when he was prominent ahead of fading two furlongs out to finish fifth to Mount Athos, with Mostabshir, who lined as well in the Victoria Cup in third in a smart Class 2. Arabian Storm looked badly in need of the run that day and this colt will need to show that he is right back to his form from last May, however if he does then this front-running type will run a big race with conditions to suit.

3.15 Haydock – Pertemps Network Swinton Handicap Hurdle (1m 7½f)

Afadil looks the one to be with if the hot favourite Lark In The Mornin’ fails to follow up his Boodles success. Afadil comes here at the top of his game after three very solid efforts in quality handicap hurdles at Cheltenham, Aintree and Ayr and looks nailed on to run his race again rewarding each way players at minimum.

Teddy Blue is talented but not always straightforward, however his runs at Kempton and Ascot in January and February showed he was in good form in big field handicaps. He was second in the Swinton last year off a 3lb higher mark and he can’t be ignored with conditions as they are.
