I would like to express my sincere condolences to The Royal Family on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty The Queen had an enduring affinity with racing throughout her 70-year reign and she contributed so much to this fantastic sport at all levels. One of my earliest flat memories was Dunfermline winning the Oaks for Her Majesty in her Silver Jubilee year, followed by Dunfermline winning her second classic when taking the St. Leger.

I was honoured and fortunate to meet Her Majesty The Queen at an event at Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty spoke to all the guests, including myself. We, of course, had a fantastic chat about horse racing and I will remember The Queen’s lovely sense of humour. It was a true honour and a lifetime memory. Her Majesty The Queen will be sorely missed.

1.00 Doncaster – Cazoo Handicap Stakes (6½f)

Able Kane won this from a 6lb lower mark than last year but comes here in good form after trying to make all at Goodwood last month, when setting a very brisk pace and after looking like he might drop away, he kept on for a valiant fourth, beaten just over a length. Able Kane is proven with a bit of cut in the ground and the booking of William Buick is the icing on the cake from a favourable draw with stall 14.

Unibet 5/1 win

1.35 Doncaster – Cazoo Flying Childers Stakes Group 2 (5f)

Trillium, for Unibet Ambassador Richard Hannon, took a big step forward when scoring at Goodwood in the Molecomb with a blistering late turn of foot that was so visually impressive. This followed up Trillium’s win at Newbury, which showed she is equally effective on a flat course. Although The Platinum Queen is 5lb clear on the ratings after her fabulous second in the Nunthorpe, this might just have taken the edge off her.

Unibet 13/8 win

2.10 Doncaster – Portland Handicap (5½f)

Whenthedealisdone (nap) was a close fifth in the Portland last year and given how easily he won at Ascot by three lengths last Saturday, clocking a good speed figure too, he has to be marked up here. This four-year-old is only 1Ib higher than in the 2021 renewal and with him returning to form on his last two starts this makes Whenthedealisdone look very well handicapped for a big run from stall 20.

Unibet 5/1 win

Makanah was an eye-catching fifth to Bergerac (reopposes) in the handicap over this trip that started the Ebor Festival. He was my selection that day and didn’t get a clear run at a crucial time in the race when looking full of running. This seven-year-old has been very consistent, being placed in lots of good races and is a course winner with cut in the ground and whilst he hasn’t won since October 2020, he looks more than capable of returning to the winners’ enclosure.

3.20 Doncaster – Cazoo Park Stakes Group 2 (7f)

New Energy ran a blinder when second to Native Trail in the Irish 2,000 Guineas back in May, when coming from last to make a late challenge without a clear run and surely this is one of the best pieces of form in the race. New Energy has since run in two other Group 1 races, including the Jean Prat last time out at Deauville in July. New Energy has been given a break, comes here fresher than most and his hold up tactics look sure to be effective, whilst his sire New Bay was a winner with some cut in the ground.

3.55 Doncaster – Cazoo St Leger Stakes Group 1 (1m 6½f)

Haskoy is a fascinating supplementary entry by Juddmonte, as this Golden Horn filly is having only her third career start. Haskoy has won her two starts and came from the rear of the field at York on her last appearance to take the Galtres Stakes beating Time Lock. Haskoy clearly lack experiences, however looks very talented and judged on pedigree has no stamina and going doubts here, with a concern that the favourite New London Unibet 5/6 may not be so effective going up in distance with cut in the ground.

Unibet 6/1 each way

Giavellotto has the improving profile that can reward each way players in a renewal that is short of really top-class performers. Giavellotto definitely stays, acts with some cut in the ground and after a solid second on soft ground in a competitive handicap at Haydock two starts ago he progressed again when an easy winner by five lengths at Newmarket over half a furlong short of this trip. At Newmarket Giavelloto was going away in the last furlong after still looking inexperienced early on in the race and this Mastercraftsman colt will take another step forward.
