Constitution Hill

We thought we had a pretty good horse on our hands going into Sandown on his debut for us, but we probably didn’t realise just how special he could be. And what he did that day in travelling so well throughout the race, and sprinting clear of a good horse after the last, did promise the world. As I said at the time, he finished off that race up the Sandown Hill on soft ground like he was racing on fast ground on a flat track. He probably didn’t have to improve a great deal on that performance to win the Tolworth last time but, once again, he oozed class in winning by 12 lengths. He did it so effortlessly and, while the placed horses haven’t franked the form, the fourth and fifth, beaten a country mile, have come out and won and proved themselves good horses in their own right. We are under no illusions what a task he faces here with some formidable horses in opposition though, and some that may well boast better form as it stands. His stablemate Jonbon for one, and then we have the main Irish challenge of Dysart Dynamo, Kilcruit and Mighty Potter. It’s a red-hot Supreme then, and then you add in the other unknowns about handling Cheltenham, the returning crowds and the atmosphere, which is sure to be at fever-pitch this year. But he would appear to have the ideal, laid-back temperament and his recent work has thrilled us, so we go into the race ready and eager to see how he matches up with the best around. I am not getting into how he fares, set against our other recent Supreme winners Altior and Shishkin, but let’s just say these are exciting times once again.

Marie’s Rock

This looks a hugely competitive mares’ hurdle but hopefully Marie’s Rock has at least an each-way chance in this. Her season has built gradually – though her seventh in the Greatwood Hurdle is much better than it appeared at the time – and the only blemish since is forgivable as she was very badly hampered when I pulled her up in the Lanzarote, so you can put a line through that run. Her wins either side of that were impressive, and hopefully there is more to come from her. There needs to be, but she comes into the race on a high.
