He could never quite get into it from off the pace in the John Smith’s Cup at York last time – it paid to be handy in that race – so I thought he probably ran pretty well in the circumstances there. He was carrying a 5lb penalty that day, so he can effectively race off a 3lb lower mark here, so he looks weighted to make his presence felt given obvious luck in running. He did it well for me at Sandown the time before and hopefully he gets a strong pace to aim at here, because that is what he wants. He ran okay when third over 1m here last season, and he has a very fair shot if he gets the breaks from his wide draw. There could be more improvement to come, and I fancy him. He could be the perfect horse for Goodwood as he has plenty of zip. He has won on good to soft, but he would like it to remain decent ground.
