Garcia favourite to win

Caroline Garcia is the early favourite to win the Nottingham Open, as she comes in as the Number One seed. That’s because Ashleigh Barty has withdrawn from the tournament after winning the French Open singles title over the weekend. Garcia, 25, reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2017 and grass is by no means her strongest surface. But the right-hander could impress here.

And Garcia does have some grass pedigree, having won the 2016 Mallorca Open with a 6-3 6-4 win over Anastasija Sevastova. Garcia will play 21-year-old British wildcard Naiktha Bains in the first round and her biggest fear in the top quarter of the draw is fifth-seed Dayana Yastremska, who at 19 years of age is only just making a name for herself on the WTA circuit.

With the inexperience in front of her, Garcia really should be making the semi-finals at least here.

Vekic a smart punt

Second seed Donna Vekic won the Nottingham Open in 2017 and is the smart bet to claim the title again. Amazingly, the 22-year-old has been on tour since 2012 and reached her first grass final in 2013 when losing at the Birmingham Open to Daniela Hantuchova.

Vekic reached the last-16 of the French Open this year before being dumped out by Brit Jo Konta. Now, Konta is not competing in Nottingham this year and that is a boost for Vekic. She is projected to meet eighth-seed Kristina Mladenovic in the quarters and Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the semis. Realistically Vekic should win both matches.

She is the smart bet for those wanting to back a winner, while you can watch the tennis live stream of her matches, which will likely provide the best action from Nottingham this week.

British contenders

Can any of the Brits really challenge here? Well, Heather Watson is back to give Nottingham another crack after losing the doubles final with Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3 7-6 in 2018. Watson has never reached the singles final here in Nottingham. In fact, her only grass-court trophy was a 2016 mixed doubles success with Henri Kontinen at Wimbledon.

Watson will be fancied by many punters but she’s been playing on the ITF Tour most of this season and this will be a big step up for the 27-year-old.

If you’re keen to back a Brit then Katie Swan may be your pick instead. Swan, 20, is only now breaking onto the WTA circuit and she is seen as an exciting prospect for the future. She is a wildcard in Nottingham and starts off against Bernarda Pera, who last year recorded her best campaign to date by reaching the main stages of all four Grand Slams. Swan is the 2.40 underdog here when these two clash on Monday, June 10.
