James Wade v Nathan Aspinall (Night 14)

With all of the league permutations aside, these guys have been duelling for a good 6-years where the 15 games they have played have been evenly split. It’s a marginal nod for Aspinall who leads their head to head 8-7, and that is due to Nathan beating Wade earlier in this campaign by 7 legs to 4. That win could signal something positive for The Asp in my view. When he wins against someone in a campaign, he always looks back at that and gains another percentage of confidence, and against James, I feel he may need that on Night 14. 

Wade has been somewhat enigmatic in this PL. We all know that he wasn’t even meant to be in it, but has he made the most of it? I think the format of this mostly behind closed doors league hasn’t suited him, and he is way more akin to doing well when it is big arenas, week on week. With fans back, will that make an impact in this for him? I don’t think so, but for his opponent it most definitely will as he will sap all of the crowd energy that he needs for a vital 2-points. 

I do fancy Aspinall to do the double over James, but I have a small gremlin sitting on my shoulder that thinks this could be 7-7. If I had to stick my neck out, I would say that all 14 legs will be played, and we will see a big checkout in this match.

Jonny Clayton v Jose De Sousa (Night 14)

Much like the Wade v Aspinall match, the key to tipping this could lie in the head to head record. When you realise what it is, you think, WOW! 

We all know how good Jose De Sousa has been the last 9 months. He has won titles in three different settings and genuinely established himself in the elite, and in this Premier League he has been not only the 180 master, but someone not to be trifled with. However, he seems to be facing his boogeyman in Clayton who really does know how to beat him, no matter the venue, situation or aspect at stake. 

They have met 7-times in total. 5 of those meetings have taken place in 2021 and JC has won ALL OF THEM, including their previous match in this event where Jonny averaged 105 in a 7-3 victory. Even with Jose averaging 108, he still couldn’t get close to the Masters champion. 

With that in mind, you have to think that The Ferret continues to win against Jose and gets the two points, and in the process, dents the chances of The Special One getting a play-off spot.
